National Occupational Standards

National Occupational Standards (NOS) are the foundational documents that define the specific skills, knowledge, and understanding required to perform a particular job role to an industry-recognized level. Developed by Industry Skills Councils (ISCs) rather than academic institutions, they serve as the absolute benchmark for workplace performance across the country.

A NOS typically breaks down a job function into discrete units of competency, specifying the exact performance criteria, safety standards, and range of variables a worker must navigate. They act as the “DNA” of the vocational system; all curriculum, learning materials, and assessment tools are directly derived from these standards, ensuring that training outcomes align perfectly with real-world employer expectations.
